Turn 3 Motorsport Resumes 2022 Championship at Barber Motorsports Park

Rounds 3 & 4 of the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Set to Take Place on the Alabama Road Course This Weekend

Leeds, Ala. (April 26, 2022) – After a two month break, Turn 3 Motorsport will resume the 2022 Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires race schedule at Barber Motorsports Park this weekend. The 2.3-mile, 17-turn Alabama road course will host Rounds 3 & 4 of the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship.

Turn 3 Motorsport kicked off the season with Indy Pro 2000 driver Josh Green taking the first pole position and win of the year on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida in February. After a fantastic showing in Rounds 1 & 2, Green left the weekend third overall in the points with only nine points separating the top four drivers.

“I am pumped to get back on track this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park,” said Green. “It’s been a full month since I’ve been in the race car, and I really can’t wait to get started. I’m feeling strong and prepared to get to work! I’m excited to continue learning about this new IP-22 and see how our first road course race pans out.”

Teammate and rookie driver Jonathan Browne got his first taste of street course racing in St. Petersburg and did an excellent job in his Indy Pro 2000 debut. With his first two races under his belt, the Irishman is ready to take on the winding hills of Barber Motorsports Park this week.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to racing this week at Barber Motorsports Park after a long break,” said Browne. “It’s a really fast and flowing track, so qualifying well here will be very important. The team and I will be giving it everything we have to be at the sharp end of the field! I’m ready to get there and get the weekend started.”

USF2000 driver Spike Kohlbecker is coming into this weekend eighth in the championship points after a strong showing in the opening rounds. The reigning Rookie of the Year qualified sixth and finished seventh at this event last year, setting a good benchmark to grow from this weekend.

“Barber Motorsports Park is a great track,” said Kohlbecker. “It’s probably one of the best if not the best in the United States. The facilities there are great, too. The track is massively undulating through the hills of Birmingham, Alabama. It has fast turns and slow turns and the pavement is so smooth. It’s going to be a lot of fun to race there this weekend, and I’m looking forward to getting on track!”

Like Browne, Christian Weir opened the 2022 season by competing on his first ever street course in Florida. The 15-year-old set a goal to earn a top-ten finish by the end of the weekend and did just that in Race 1. With Barber Motorsports Park being a track he is more familiar with than most, Weir is ready to challenge for his first top-five finish.

“I’m excited to be racing in Birmingham, Alabama for this weekend’s race at Barber Motorsports Park and excited to get back together with the whole team after our long break,” said Weir. “Following the events in St. Petersburg, I’m hoping for strong results in Rounds 3 & 4. I’ve been working with the team to get better prepared, and I’m looking to be a strong contender for this weekend’s races. Barber is a track that I am more familiar with than all of the other courses I have competed at in USF2000, and I believe being able to start a weekend from a strong point will lead to those top points scoring positions. This is the weekend I believe that I can start to work my way up in the points standings to help in my championship fight.”

Peter Dempsey

Turn 3 Motorsport Team Owner

“It’s been a long time since the last race in St. Petersburg,” said Team Owner Peter Dempsey. “I know everyone on the team is excited to get to Barber Motorsports Park and keep pushing on. We haven’t done a lot of testing since the series test at Barber last month, but we felt we had a good test there and are hoping we can have an extremely strong showing this weekend with all four of our drivers. Barber is a challenging track to pass on, so qualifying is key to having another successful race event. Our drivers are as prepared as they can be heading into the weekend, and we are looking forward to getting things going.”

The weekend begins with a pre-event test day on Thursday for the Indy Pro 2000 group followed by practice and qualifying on Friday for USF2000 and Indy Pro 2000. Races 1 and 2 for both series will take place on Saturday and Sunday. A full weekend schedule is detailed below.
